Gladiatrix III - Week 17 Update

Sierra stands before the Valtrescan chieftain in the audience hall. She explains the interesting history on how this all-female tribe was formed.

  • I only need a few more days and I'll be posting the preview. I just have a little more polishing and testing to do. Thanks for hanging in there and being patient. I think it will be much better with the extra time spent and you'll get a few hours of playing time out of it. Check back this weekend to see if the preview is ready to download.

  1. Looking forward to the preview. But don't rush on our account. Make sure your happy with it before releasing, we don't mind waiting.

  2. It's great that the preview is almost here :) But as Count Marcus said, don't rush it and make sure that you're happy with it :)

  3. Rush it, but make it good! :P

Yes, I'm pulling your leg. ;)

  4. What everyone else has said.

While I do wait (im)patiently for a chance at playing the module, definitely don't want to rush you. Take your time and when it gets released, it gets released. Just am so glad someone is still modding for the original NWN and doing such a great job of it as well!

Release it when you feel like it. Besides, I'm going to be away this weekend and won't have time to play it anyway. :P

  5. Just an update. It looks like I'll have the preview ready some time on Sunday. It might be late Sunday, but I think I'll hit my goal of having it released this weekend (It will probably Monday if you're in Australia).

Oh, and I had a scary moment. I woke up this morning, turned on my laptop and there was nothing but black screen. Even after rebooting a few times it was still black screen. The last time I saved a copy of the module off my system was the beginning of August! I almost cried. Luckily, I was able to fix it. If you ever get a black screen on your laptop that won't go away just take the battery out - hold the power button down for 30 secs to clear static electricity - put the battery back in and power it back up. I was so relieved when this worked! Needless to say, I immediately backed up my module :) Stay tuned.

    1. I would have to say we all would have cried right along with you, I have been ready for the preview lol I am replaying 1&2 while waiting :D can't wait!

    2. Oh Criminy. I can feel your pain on that. I had my last laptop die, and I lost almost 2 novels worth or writing, and the latest edits in another 2. *facepalm*

I'm not too masculine to admit I cried about THAT. Brutal. I'm still re-editing stuff I had fixed from then. So yeah, computers always seem to die right when it's most inconvenient for creative ambitions.

  6. Buy a cheap external hard drive and back up important stuff every week/month.

It really helps with piece of mind.

  7. Great news on both! That a release is forthcoming and that your module wasn't wiped out!

Though I definitely think it is sound advice to back up your data. Or at least important things like your mod. :) Either get an external HD or just copy the stuff to a flash drive. Have had extremely good luck using both methods.

So happy though that your module is still on the HD and the partial mod is going to be released soon! Thanks so much!

  8. Hi everyone. I had a few scripts that weren't working when I was doing a run through. I had to go back and fix them. Check back tomorrow to see if the preview is ready. Thanks!

    1. I think I have everything fixed. I have to do another run through when I get home from work tonight to make sure I get from start to finish without problems. If everything checks out I'll be posting it late tonight. Tonight for me is EST, so that might be morning for someone else. Of course, if there are still snags, that could delay things but I think I'm close to ready :)

      Delete
    2. EST? For some reason I thought you lived in the UK.

Hope to play it soon :)

  10. Cool. Hopefully everything goes well with your play through and if not I am sure we can wait a couple more days for you to work out the kinks. I figured you were either on PST or EST time and now I know and knowing is half the battle. Sorry I couldn't resist the reference. :P

  11. It's just a beta preview release. It doesn't have to be perfect or fully functional just as long as we can play around with it some.

Save the perfect, fully functional one for the real version and post the preview, please.

  12. @Anon-

It's her preview. She can put it up whenever she damn well pleases.

  13. And she doesn't people to speak for her either.

    1. I wouldn't presume to speak for her, but when I see someone who's actively complaining about not getting their free game in a timely manner it irks me.

What he wrote I read as,
[Kid voice] "But I waannt it nooooow!"

  15. The one thing true about Game Designer's in general is that they will release their work when they feel it's ready. It will be on her schedule and no one else's. Fallen Rayne does good work and if it ends up taking longer than planned to get all the kinks out so be it. Only thing I would suggest though is that I would have told no one about a preview and just sprung it on people. That way no one can bug you about not having it out yet or maybe I am just being cruel. :P

  16. Hi everyone! Well, I'm actually flattered that people are anxious to give this a go. I got stuck on a script that just wasn't working at all. It was a simple 'start conversation' script so I'm baffled why it wouldn't work. I ended up having to bypass that conversation since it wasn't that important.

Anyway, I still haven't had the chance to do a front to back run through. For anyone who is anxious to try it in its current state I feel fairly confident that it is in good shape but I can't guarantee that you won't hit a roadblock. So this is the pre-prerelease for those who want to go ahead and take it for a spin. Otherwise, if you don't mind waiting another day or so for my more thorough test, I will be posting a more official release at that time.

Here's the link to what I have so far. It will end after completing the Valtrescan tribe encounters. I recommend using a COPY of the character that you completed G2 with.

  17. oooh, to wait or to play, to wait or to play, to wait or to play . . . if I play now, than in a few days I can play again with the official preview . . . Dear Santa I'm sorry I opened all the presents on christmas eve, but it's your fault for delivering them too early . . . What can I say, I'm rubbish at waiting!!

  18. Hmm, I seem to have run into a bit of a problem with the the preview. In the Forest of Sorrows area, right when you defeat the Zorg (the weird green monster) and continue around to the right where I should meet the next 3 monsters. Before I can continue to the next level, my game crashes every time. I'm not sure if the appearance of the other monsters is at fault, because the game crashes before they appear in the fog. The level appears just fine in the construction set though.
Just wanted to let you know as a bug report. Perhaps someone here can help me with that so i can continue to enjoy an up to this point brilliant module.

    1. Hmm, someone else got through that part. The monsters are already there. The crash must happen when they start casting spells. You can try a clean override folder, make a backup of your hak folder and make a new hak folder with only the CEP files and Gladiatrix hak files. It might be a hak conflict. I do have a lot of mist placeables in that area. Maybe it's all too demanding for your system. If you know your way around the toolset maybe you could run a test. Try taking the mist placeables out and put yourself as a starting point in that area. You could put Tessa in the area too (she's in Special - Custom - Custom3) when you talk to her, her dock conversation will start but then she'll join you. Then you can see if you get through the area. I'd be curious to see if it is the mist that is demanding too much from your system. I'll keep an eye out to see if anyone else has trouble. Thanks for reporting.

    2. I managed to get past this issue by reducing my graphic-settings to a bare minimum.... which is kind of embarrassing since I run a relatively high-end machine. If I find the time I'll check out if it is indeed the mist but until then I'll just have to repeat that this module is amazing and I'm restlessly waiting for the full version now. Thx for the prompt and helpful tips by the way. You rock FR!

      Delete
    3. I'm getting the same crash. I'll poke around if I can find the cause.

    4. I have the same issue. I don't think it would be performance--I also have a high-end machine, although I suspect most of us are running NWN in compatibility mode. But also, this is at the back of the level, and there is fog everywhere. I would suspect an override conflict of some sort.

      Delete
    5. I took most of the mist out in the new version of the preview I'm getting ready to post. I only left a little in. I hope it helps. Otherwise it's probably a hak conflict when the beast starts casting spells.

  19. Just played through it myself...some spoilers might be displayed below.

    ...

    ....

    ......

    .......

    Begin Spoilers:

I didn't find any major errors. Though I most likely didn't explore everything. Will maybe go back to a save or two and explore a bit more later.

Only minor issue was when Tessa died, I resurrected her and began the same conversation with me as the one she had when I first met her on the docks. But after that, there were no issues.

Didn't have the problem that Anonymous above me had in the Forest of Sorrows. Maybe I was just lucky(?) And didn't have any crashes anywhere else either.

Looks good so far! Thanks so much for the preview! And certainly await playing through the final draft of it.

    1. Wow, I can't believe this many people have played it already and gotten this far. I forgot to add a resurrect conversation. I'll do that. Thanks for letting me know.

  20. I've encountered a bit of a problem. Very minor spoilers below

    --

I found Landon, told my story to the pegasus, got teleported, found Landon's gear, went in the alchemist's hut, and once I left, there was no blue spot on the ground indicating that I could move on to the next area. It was obvious where I was supposed to go, and only after spam clicking a number of times was I able to actually get it to engage and load me in to the next area.

    1. Yeah, i have the same problem, but i haven't been able to move forward yet.

      Trying the click spamming.

    2. When I tested that on my lunch break it only worked for me when moving her with the keyboard back and forth a few times. I think the keys are something like A or D to move her. That transition will be fixed when I post the official preview later tonight.

  21. I only have one thing to say: I want more!
I didn't find any errors, or any problems other than that I've had to try my way to progress after the alchemist's hut. But otherwise I loved it. Great job!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Loved the pre-preview lol but wish I could play more! - but I wait patiently, or try to lol :)

One thing thou, I had the same problem with the preview, after I got teleported, got landon's gear, did a little shopping, I had to use the keyboard to run back and fort to get to the next area. But other then that no bugs :)

P.S I is soooooo great to have Landon back!! :D:D

  23. I find it amusing that you all I have done a complete run through the module before I've even had a chance to :) I've only played it in bits and pieces. I'll have to trust that it's in decent shape. I do want to fix the area transition after the alchemist hut and take some of the mist out of the Forest of Sorrows so that it isn't too demanding on systems. Oh, and the resurrection conversations are missing. Just a few other minor adjustments. So I'll plan on posting the official preview later tonight. I'm at work right now so it will have to wait until then. Thanks for all the interest and feedback. It is very encouraging to hear.

  24. Thx for the preview :). Looks really great but I've found two bugs...

    - if you resurrect Tessa and talk to her you get the sailor dialog (edit: ah, you know that already).
    - Tessa lacks the Weapon Finesse feat making her somewhat useless in combat.

    Keep up the good work!

    1. Thanks for catching that. I'm setting her up with weapon finesse in the new preview I'm about to post.

  25. Torchlight 2, Borderlands 2, a humble bundle 6, Gladiatrix 3... Where did my money and free time go?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Completed the preview. Very enjoyable. I agree about maybe dialing back the mist a 'little' bit in the Forest of Shadows.

    SPOILER

I also don't know how often Tessa is supposed to win w/ competitive advantage. But she still lost...every time. I'm guessing because she has fewer attacks per round than her competition.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. When I tested she won 2 out of 4 tests when she took the potion. I'll adjust her competitors down a level to give her more of a fighting chance. Thanks for the observation!

      Delete
    2. I've played through the preview twice, both times I told her not to take the potion, she won once, by quite a large margin, and the second time she just barely lost, her target was at maybe 6% HP when the contest ended.

      Delete
  27. It is a bit funny how the events turn out for different people. I played the module twice and both times Tessa won. Ok, the last time she won by using those magical PED's. :)

Is there a random chance for them to tell if Tessa is cheating or not? Just curious.

I also got different results from the card game too (I won one and lost the other time).

    JC

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. y-you can get different results from the card game?

I lost all 4 times I've tried... Time to go back and play again!

      Delete
    2. The card game is based on odds. You get a random chance for each hand. It should be about a 50/50 chance that your team will win or lose.

For the archery, I tried to set the Valtrescan archers a hair better than Tessa. But if she takes the potion that should even the playing field and give her a better chance.

      **SPOILER**
I didn't program an option for her to get caught cheating. I just wanted the player to think that they MIGHT get caught cheating.

      Delete
  28. At least I did. Either that or my Tessa just has superior poker skills. ;)

I won one and lost one in my 2 times I played it. I also was 1-1 in the arena too. Though after I won the first battle, I kinda threw the 2nd one a bit just to see if anything bad would happen to me if I lost the match.
